Here is the second installment of the Top 25, and the thing that I love about college football is that even the top programs in the country have issues. The five teams on this list all have limitations and issues and that what makes college football interesting to me. You never know which team is going to show up on Saturday. Confidence comes and goes in college football and this is why you see inconsistency throughout college football.
20. South Carolina Gamecocks-Spurrier has 17 starters returning, but once again must settle on a quarterback. Chris Smelley is the leader in the clubhouse and 8 of 10 top linemen return, but this team is loaded on defense with linebackers Jasper Brinkley and Eric Norwood project as stars and the back end is extremely talented.
19. Illinois Fighting Illini- Juice Williams returns on a very talented team. Ron Zook has stocked the cupboard with premium talent, now they need to become more consistent on the football field. Big Ten is not overly talented this year, so there is opportunity for the Illini. How do they rebound from the USC dismantling in the Rose Bowl?
18. Tennessee Volunteers- Returning the Top OL in the SEC and Arian Foster running behind them. They must replace Erik Ainge at quarterback, but this team is always talented and in the SEC you need to bring it every week or you may be looking at a new regime in Knoxville.
17. BYU Cougars- This team returns 9 starters on offense including Max Hall who continues the tradition of great BYU quarterbacks. This team could be the BCS darlings of 08 with a softer schedule in the Mountain West. Difficult road games against TCU and Utah seem to be the roadblocks toward an undefeated season. If you want to play in a BCS game you have to beat those teams.
16. Kansas Jayhawks- This is a team that intrigues me because everything went right for them last year so you want to drop them, but I trust Todd Reesing and Mark Mangino. In football, you need a good quarterback pulling the trigger and I think Reesing is a gamer. Mangino is a great coach good for a couple wins a year. They schedule turns brutal as they play Texas, OU, and Tech this year. They will not match last years magical run, but they are still a very solid team with 9 defensive starters returning and Reesing.
Like I said up top, every team has issues and that is what I love about college football. You never know what you are going to get on Saturdays. I trust a good coach and a solid quarterback on most days, but that is why I tune in because you never know when these teams are going to self destruct.
